Thanks to Criterion and VCI, here are two more titles from the British cinema’s finest hour — World War II and its difficult aftermath. Carol Reed’s 1940 “Night Train to Munich,” an entertaining follow-up to Hitchcock’s “The Lady Vanishes” from the screenwriters Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat, opened just days before the German bombing [...] “Psycho” turns 50 today, and J. Hoberman has a fine appreciation on the Village Voice website that includes Andrew Sarris’s 1960 review — his first published work in the Voice. It’s good to see Warner Home Video digging into their Monogram/Allied Artists holdings, even if there are no undiscovered masterpieces among the four titles in WHV’s recent “Charlie Chan Collection.” Most of the auteur interest here is concentrated in the stylish opening sequence of Phil Karlson’s 1946 “Dark Alibi”; otherwise, you get Terry Morse’s [...] Below are a few images from the John Ford film that’s been discovered in New Zealand — part of a nice haul of 75 or so silent films that are currently being brought back to the US by the National Film Preservation Foundation.
