Ingmar Bergman’s “Summer with Monika” was the first of his films to receive distribution outside of Sweden, though as the poster above suggests — from “America’s Fearless Showman,” Kroger Babb — it probably wasn’t Bergman’s sensitive direction that was bringing in the crowds. Babb’s version was cut, re-scored (by lounge music legend Les Baxter, [...] I never pass up a chance to reproduce Anselmo Ballester’s magnificent Italian poster for Fritz Lang’s “The Big Heat,” and the film’s appearance as an excellent new Blu-ray from our friends at Twilight Time seems as fine as excuse as they come. It’s a limited edition (3,000 copies) available only over the net, so [...] You may not agree with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, whose members proclaimed in 1960 that “Pillow Talk” represented “the best writing, story and screenplay written directly for the screen” far better than the other obscure titles nominated that year: “The 400 Blows,” “North by Northwest,” “Wild Strawberries” and “Operation Petticoat.” [...] |
